Opalised Mussel Shell – Lightning Ridge, NSW
This stunning piece began its journey over 100 million years ago, when ancient freshwater mussels lived in the inland sea that once covered what is now Lightning Ridge. Over time, silica-rich water slowly replaced the organic material of the shell, preserving every delicate ridge and curve.
These fossils are from the Pelecypod family (commonly known as mussels or clams), and are believed to be similar to the Unioid species, a freshwater mollusc. Each specimen is a natural time capsule — a perfect blend of geological history and Australian opal magic.
